The new year always brings new opportunities. We’re sure that many of you have exciting pursuits on the horizon for 2022 and some of these goals may involve a new job and that likely means an interview.
Interviews can be a nerve-wracking experience but also exciting given the prospect of a new opportunity! To ensure you are fully prepared and are feeling confident, Initi8 have put together 8 top tips to help you succeed.
1. Research the company
Not only will it boost your confidence, knowing more about the company and how it operates, you will also come across as enthusiastic about the opportunity to work there. Also research your interviewer as you may have common ground and can easily build rapport.
2. Know your CV and experience
Interviewers may want to know more about your experience to get a better understanding of how your skills and background will benefit the company and if you would be a good fit. ‘Tell me a time when...’ is a common question asked in interviews and you may have a great scenario to speak about that isn’t on your CV.
3. Be prepared
If you are having a face-to-face interview, give yourself enough time to get to your destination. You never know when there may be traffic or issues with public transport, ensure you check your route prior to leaving and allow yourself some extra time.
If your interview is over video or phone, ensure you have set up your laptop/computer in a quiet area where you won’t be distracted. Make sure you have battery on your phone and have all the correct links so you are prepared.
4. Dress for the job you want
Whether you are being interviewed over video or in person, always dress smart and appropriately.
Feeling good in yourself will make you feel more confident and interview better.
5. Body language
Make sure you give eye contact, have a firm handshake and sit with a good posture. This will make you come across as being confident and ready for the interview.
6. Pause
It’s okay to take a pause and think about your answer to a question, it’s better to do this rather than rambling or going off topic.
7. Think of questions to ask
You want to make sure you want to work at the company as much as they want to hire you so use this opportunity to ask any important questions you have. Not having anything to ask may come across to the interviewer that you aren’t as interested in the job.
8. Be yourself
Take a deep breath, let your personality shine through and be authentic.
