Interviews can be daunting for some, but the key to interview success is in the preparation. There is no need to be worried if you have researched properly and thought carefully about your answers and how to present yourself. The importance of reviewing and updating your interview skills is often overlooked, but our trained consultants are here to provide the best help for your preparation.
- Do your homework - not knowing anything about the company shows a lack of interest. Study their website, Google information and reports about the company and look for articles in the trade press. See if they’ve been in the news recently and study their history.
Check the company’s Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook feeds for short form information and to get a feel for their branding and business approach. Search out additional information on LinkedIn about the person/people who will be interviewing you. See if you have any acquaintances in common. Ask the company to confirm your interviewer/s if you do not have this information.
- Make sure you are well informed by reading trade magazines and looking up news/information sites relating to your business area and the IT industry overall.
- Research the company’s competitors, find out if they’ve been in the news recently.
- Study the job description so that you have a solid idea of the qualities and skill set required.
- Review your CV and make sure that you have thought of examples that cover the points made. You need to be ready to talk confidently about your experience and achievements.
- Don’t be late as this gives a bad impression. Aim to arrive 5-10 minutes early.
- Make sure you are dressed appropriately. As a rule, the best idea is a smart, professional suit. However, your research of the company will provide you with information (wearing a suit to a start up in East London, for example, would not be a good choice).
- First impressions are vital. Give a firm handshake and make eye contact.
- During the interview, make sure you have understood the question. Ask for clarification if you are unsure.
- Answer the questions clearly and back up your answers with examples. Take your time and make sure your answer is on point and precise.
- Be honest.
- Make sure you can talk knowledgably about what makes you a good candidate for the role. Emphasise any qualities or past experiences (work related or personal) that will make you stand out from the rest of the candidates.
- Show your enthusiasm for the role.
- Demonstrate your professionalism.
- If you are asked about money, tell them what you earn and what you’d like to earn. It’s best to discuss this first with your consultant who can have these conversations with the employers on your behalf.
- Interviews are two sided – make sure you have some pre-prepared questions.
- Confirm your interest in the role and thank them for their time before leaving.

Your interview is a chance to sell yourself as the ideal candidate. Remember that an employer is interested in how you will fit into their workplace, so promote yourself as someone they would like to have on their team. Talk through your experience and how it benefits them. Give a good impression of the type of person you are, talk about your work ethic, and what you bring to the role. Sometimes cultural fit is equally as important as your level of experience, so make sure you present yourself in the best light possible.
